Model of CALL

Welcome to the third class of this CALL Overview!

In this section, we will take a look at a model of CALL and its design and elements and how they influence students to achieve the expected learning outcomes.

The Design of a CALL Program

The design of CALL involves a set of educational theories, interactive tools, activities or exercises, multimedia communications, didactic materials for sizable groups of students, etc.

Keep in mind!

It is essential to take into account information about the group of learners we are meant to teach prior to designing a CALL program in order to meet their needs, those considerations are:
  1. The age of the target group
  2. Their Language Level
  3. The Objective of the Program
  4. Selection of Pedagogical Approaches
  5. Selection of Pedagogical Methodologies
  6. Selection of Software
  7. Selection of Materials

Teacher and pupil classroom behavior: activities used in CALL

CALL programs offer a wide range of activities that can be sorted out according to the target students’ characteristics such as age and high or low-order thinking level, regarding all the linguistics skills including grammar and vocabulary sections.

CALL and Culture

CALL programs give us the opportunity to make use of different resources, among them we have the internet, which “offers a rich source of authentic cultural material and an environment for intercultural learning to take place with multiple channels for exploration and modes of interaction with distant learners.” (Helm & Guth, 2011)
